A Secret for a Secret by Helena Hunting

Release Date: May 12, 2020

Publisher: Montlake

SYNOPSIS: My name is Ryan Kingston, and I’m a rule follower. I’ve never been in a fistfight. I always obey the speed limit. I don’t get drunk, and I definitely don’t pick up random women at bars. Except the night I found out that my whole existence has been a lie. I got drunk. And picked up a stranger. Her name was Queenie, and she was everything I’m not: reckless, impulsive, and chaotic. We did shots and traded secrets. And ended up naked at my place. She left me a thank-you note in the morning and her panties as a parting gift. But no way to contact her. Six weeks later I’m sitting in the first official team meeting of the season, and there she is. I neglected to mention that I’m the goalie for Seattle’s NHL team. And Queenie? Turns out she’s the general manager’s daughter.

REVIEW

Seriously, I am loving this series. The little bit we see of King in A Favor for a Favor had me super interested in what his story would be like. The milk, the khakis, and all the manners. The is the ultimate opposites attract and it was great! Getting to know these characters was super fun. King, well he is definitely book boyfriend material, even though I don’t know how I could handle letting him drive (you’ll see). And Queenie? She is a hot mess, but for a lot of valid reasons. The story touches on the impact of keeping secrets out of embarrassment, which is just such a real topic. It’s something many of us has done, and the majority of the time it doesn’t make things better. The support and caring we see as events happen in this book is super heartwarming. I just loved it and I’m hoping we’re going to get more from the All in Series!

Was April rough for you too?

Okay, so April did not include any reading for me. Usually it is my go-to coping skill, but I haven’t been able to focus at all. With everything going on, changing my very hands-on job to a virtual platform, and my father passing away, I have been a hot mess in all honesty. I’m seriously waiting for the day when I pick up a book and get lost in it. Hopefully soon!

With all of this going on I haven’t been able to keep up on blog posts and ARCs, so I just wanted to showcase the amazing books I wanted to get to this past month. Kind of like a wrap up, but I didn’t read them all. Haha. So here are books that are DEFINITELY on my TBR!

Pub Date: April 1, 2020

Synopsis: Ryder Ever since she sat next to me in class and gave me death eyes, Willa Sutter’s been on my shit list. Why she hates me, I don’t know. What I do know is that Willa is the kind of chaos I don’t need in my tidy life. She’s the next generation of women’s soccer. Wild hair, wilder eyes. Bee-stung lips that should be illegal. And a temper that makes the devil seem friendly. She’s a thorn in my side, a menacing, cantankerous, pain-in-the-ass who’s turned our Business Mathematics course into a goddamn gladiator arena. I’ll leave this war zone unscathed, coming out on top…And if I have my way with that crazy-haired, ball-busting hellion, that will be in more than one sense of the word.

Willa Rather than give me the lecture notes I missed like every other instructor I’ve had, my asshole professor tells me to get them from the silent, surly flannel-wearing mountain man sitting next to me in class. Well, I tried. And what did I get from Ryder Bergman? Ignored. What a complete lumbersexual neanderthal. Mangy beard and mangier hair. Frayed ball cap that hides his eyes. And a stubborn refusal to acknowledge my existence. I’ve battled men before, but with Ryder, it’s war. I’ll get those notes and crack that Sasquatch nut if it’s the last thing I do, then I’ll have him at my mercy. Victory will have never tasted so sweet.

Suddenly, I’m a single dad in way over my head. There is no playbook for situations like this. Luckily, I have Paisley. My gorgeous neighbor, my long-time crush, and now—my savior. Synopsis: What is The Bachelors Club?

It’s a gentleman’s club—like the dignified men of the past used to have. Except, we’re not gentleman, and we’re not dignified.
We’re ineligible bachelors, bored, jaded and not looking for relationships. Quite the opposite actually. So committed to being single, we’ve created a high stakes bet to see who can remain single the longest…
Four days co-habitating in a shared work space shouldn’t be a big deal. It shouldn’t be distracting. But Spencer Standish saw me puking in a company trash can, and won’t let me live it down. Cheerful, aggravating Spencer, who wants me to fetch her coffee. As if she’s the boss of me. And now I’m stuck sharing her office. Let’s face facts: I can’t be in a relationship; not when there’s a bet to win—not with Spencer, who loves my uncontrollable basset hound, lazy Sundays, and grilled cheese as much as I do. I refuse to fall for her.

I will be the last Bachelor standing.

Synopsis: Dani – As a bestselling romance author, most assume my life’s glamorous, filled with combustible chemistry, and most of all, romance. Ha! I can only wish. With a deadline looming, I’ve escaped to my family’s cabin on Anderson Island to free myself from distractions. My plan’s great, until a man, who could pass as a cover model on one of my books, comes to my rescue. Is there chemistry? Sure. Is he everything I’d look for in a guy? Absolutely. But will my career be at risk if I give into my desire?

Luke – For a player, women line up outside the locker room. For coaches, we’re lucky to get in the game. As the youngest NFL coach in the league, I live, eat, breathe, and even sleep football. To gear up for this season, I return to my home on Anderson Island for a much-needed break. When Dani literally crashes into my life, my mind’s suddenly on the sexy brunette with a sailors mouth, rather than my team’s next play. She has me dusting off another playbook entirely, making me wonder, did I make the right call?

Pub Date: April 16, 2020

Synopsis: Jonas Schwartz isn’t just good at playing football. He’s also good at playing hearts, and four years ago, he played mine like it was the easiest game of his life. Brokenhearted, I ran off to art school, swearing to forget about my one-off secret weekend with the star quarterback. I’d heard whispers about his injury, but I never expected Jonas to return to our hometown to rehab his knee, and I certainly never thought he’d show up on the other side of my door with a pizza in hand. He looks good. Better than before. Whatever—I’m over him. I’ve completely moved on. I just wish my heart would get the memo…

Pub Date: April 21, 2020

First, I catch my movie star husband having an affair with his co-star. Then when I return to work, my job is at stake, because Court has gotten himself into trouble…again. Instead of getting him back in line, I find myself falling for his charm. And into his bed. And against the wall. And, and, and… Except Kensington charm shouldn’t work on me. Not when I’ve sworn to never ever sleep with a client. I had good intentions.
I really did. But we all know the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Not According to Plan by A. M. Madden

Release Date: March 23, 2020

Publisher: Entangled Amara

SYNOPSIS: For one night of my life, I dared to do something reckless. My birthday. A bar. Karaoke. And a man so hot he could melt the sun. Sparks flew. Lust took over. For one night of my life, I felt alive. Then I was back to my “boring” life. Career-driven. Goal-oriented. Always planning ahead. But nothing could have prepared me for the positive pregnancy test. We weren’t that reckless. There goes my “boring” life. And what happens when I tell the father?

REVIEW: I want to preface my review by saying that accidental pregnancy is one of my all time favorite tropes and that is why I picked this one up. It’s also been a while since I really disliked a book, but I found this plot to be over the top. I also sincerely disliked the male character, as he was always making decisions for the female lead. Personally, the ending was not a happy one for me either. The whole story just made me irritated and unhappy. I can say a lot more, but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, because you may very well be intrigued by this one.

Love Hard by Nalini Singh

5 STARS!

Release Date: March 10, 2020

SYNOPSIS: Jacob Esera, star rugby player and young single father, has worked hard to create a joyous life for his six-year-old daughter. After the death of his childhood sweetheart soon after their daughter’s birth, all Jake wants is safety and stability. No risks. No wild chances. And especially no Juliet Nelisi, former classmate, scandal magnet, and a woman who is a thorn in his side.

As a lonely teenager, Juliet embraced her bad-girl reputation as a shield against loneliness and rejection. Years later, having kicked a cheating sports-star ex to the curb, she has a prestigious job and loyal friends—and wants nothing to do with sportsmen. The last thing she expects is the fire that ignites between her and the stuffed-shirt golden boy who once loved her best friend.

Straitlaced Jacob Esera versus wild-at-heart Juliet Nelisi? Place your bets.

REVIEW

I loved this story. It was so emotional and everything I wanted. The connection both characters have goes way back, but not in a romantic way, which adds so much to the story. I love seeing their friendship and feelings grow. Juliet’s family life and first marriage were not the best and it has a big impact on how she interacts Jacob–who comes from an amazing family, but with a tragic first love story. I will definitely be reading all of the Nalini Singh books the involving Jacob Esera’s family (the Hard Play series and the Rock Kiss series).

A Favor for a Favor by Helena Hunting

Release Date: January 28, 2020

Publisher: Montlake

SYNOPSIS: When I joined Seattle’s NHL expansion team, I thought it was the start of something great. But nothing ever goes the way you expect. Take my introduction to my new neighbor. She came rolling in on the hot mess express at midnight, making a racket while she tried to get into my team captain’s apartment. Did I mention that he’s married to a woman who definitely was not her?

Imagine my surprise when I end up with an injury that has me out of the game for weeks, and she’s the one to offer to help me. I should probably add that she’s not the captain’s mistress. She’s his sexy, pastel-haired younger sister.

So we come up with an arrangement: she rehabs me so that I can get back on the ice sooner, and she can add a professional athlete that isn’t her brother to her client list. Seems simple enough. As long as I can keep my hands to myself and my hormones in check.

REVIEW: The start of the book is hilarious and horrible at the same time. Hilarious, because you know both sides of the story, horrible because Bishop is so, so wrong. I loved every moment of it. He is one surly, delicious, hockey player. The family element in this book was amazing. I love how the interactions between both of the main characters and their siblings play such a big role in how the story progresses. Helena Hunting does a wonderful job with hockey player stories by really fleshing out the individual men and usually pitting them against strong wonderful women. I would definitely recommend this book!

Love Her or Lose Her by Tessa Bailey

SYNOPSIS

Rosie and Dominic Vega are the perfect couple: high school sweethearts, best friends, madly in love. Well, they used to be anyway. Now Rosie’s lucky to get a caveman grunt from the ex-soldier every time she walks in the door. Dom is faithful and a great provider, but the man she fell in love with ten years ago is nowhere to be found. When her girlfriends encourage Rosie to demand more out of life and pursue her dream of opening a restaurant, she decides to demand more out of love, too. Three words: marriage boot camp.

Never in a million years did Rosie believe her stoic, too-manly-to-emote husband would actually agree to relationship rehab with a weed-smoking hippie. Dom talking about feelings? Sitting on pillows? Communing with nature? Learning love languages? Nope. But to her surprise, he’s all in, and it forces her to admit her own role in their cracked foundation. As they complete one ridiculous—yet surprisingly helpful—assignment after another, their remodeled relationship gets stronger than ever. Except just as they’re getting back on track, Rosie discovers Dom has a secret… and it could demolish everything.

REVIEW

Okay, so I fell in LOVE with Fix Her Up, the first book in the Hot & Hammered Series. Which meant I was so excited for Love Her or Lose Her, especially because we met Rosie and Dominic in the previous book. This book was a damn journey. There are so many ups and downs, but the growth of both characters kept me completely enthralled. I’ve got to admit that I love a book with a good therapist, and Tessa Bailey wrote a really hilariously good one. Couples therapy for the Vega’s is so eye opening, and I really enjoyed that. Sometimes we need that objective person to point things out to us that are right outside of our perspective. Rosie and Dominic kind of made me want to scream at certain points, because I felt like they shouldn’t be that dense, but it is what it is. Overall, I enjoyed the second book is the Hot & Hammered Series, and I’m looking forward to the third!

Falling in love forces Nathan to face his biggest fear, and when hearts, both big and little, are on the line, the only thing scarier than needing someone is losing them all.

REVIEW

This damn book. I loved every moment of it. Single parent romances are just so heartwarming, and this one even more so.

J. Daniels does such a good job at actually making the children characters that fuel the story. I fell in love with the kids, which made me so much more invested in the main characters and the interactions they had with each other’s children. It was impossible to not to feel for Nathan. And Jenna is just what he needs. There are some ups and downs, but not over the top drama which I also appreciated. I’m so very happy I picked this one up, and now I’m going to add the previous books in the Dirty Deeds series to my TBR!

The Bastard’s Proposal

When he wakes in a carriage at Hattie’s feet, Whit, a king of Covent Garden known to all the world as Beast, can’t help but wonder about the strange woman who frees him—especially when he discovers she’s headed for a night of pleasure . . . on his turf. He is more than happy to offer Hattie all she desires…for a price.

An Unexpected Passion

Soon, Hattie and Whit find themselves rivals in business and pleasure. She won’t give up her plans; he won’t give up his power . . . and neither of them sees that if they’re not careful, they’ll have no choice but to give up everything . . . including their hearts.

REVIEW

So I’ve come to realize I’m not the biggest Historical Romance fan, I really need to be in the right mood to read it. That being said, I still did enjoy this one. The banter and wit made me really enjoy Hattie and Beast. The journey of their relationship and the chemistry was just so enjoyable. I’m also a sucker for a woman, especially in a historical, that wants to take charge of her own life. So when Hattie started that train of thought I was all in. Overall, I think this book was a fun historical romance that most readers will enjoy!

In It to Win It by Kelly Jamieson

4 STARS

Release Date: July 23, 2019

Publisher: Loveswept

SYNOPSIS

JP Wynn: I admit, I’ve made some bad choices—on and off the ice.
Now all I want to do is show my team I can control my emotions while I’m playing and redeem myself with my family, especially with my brother, Théo. I hate that I hurt him and I’m determined to stay out of trouble. But the hot bridesmaid at Théo’s wedding is tempting me into another bad decision. A little flirting and a hook up with Taylor seem harmless . . . until Manny Martinez jumps me on the dance floor and starts beating the crap out of me.
And just like that I add one more bad decision to my résumé.

Taylor Hart: I always thought hockey players were hot. Now I think they’re crazy. Manny broke my heart when he got traded to another team and left without even a goodbye. Then he showed up at my best friend’s wedding. All I wanted to do was show Manny that I was over him. And the groom’s sexy brother, JP, seemed more than willing to be my distraction. But after the way everything went down, I want nothing to do with any of them. Easier said than done. Especially when Lacey’s new brother-in-law is always around. . . .
And I keep thinking about the wedding night, when we snuck away to his room for the best sex of my life.

REVIEW

I knew this book would be angsty! In the first book of the series, Play to Win, we get introduced to the chaos that is the Wynn family. It paints a pretty crappy picture of JP, who is the main character in this book, and it made me eager to learn what the real story is. I think something that makes Kelly Jamieson’s books intriguing is the realness of the characters. There were times I didn’t like the characters because of the choices they made. On the other hand, Jamieson does a great job at giving you back story so you understand why the characters do what they do. She’s also great at chemistry! I mean the chemistry between JP and Taylor is sizzling good. I would definitely recommend this book to readers that love sport romance with a lot of ups and downs. The rocky journey makes the ending so much better!
