Roping Melanie by Melissa Ellen

4 STARS

Release Date: July 27, 2021

SYNOPSIS: I didn’t have a lot, but what I had I was proud of. I was raised to keep my head down and work hard. I followed the rules, rarely straying off the straight and narrow path. That’s why when the opportunity to get wild and have a little fun presented itself, I jumped on it—or more like on him. The handsome cowboy from the bar. It was one night in Vegas. Afterward, all I had was the memory of his body pressed to mine and the hotel room key I swiped as I snuck out. I never expected to see him again. I definitely never imagined he’d show up in my small hometown seven years later, only to discover the daughter he never knew about.

REVIEW: I found Melissa Ellen with the last book in this series, Tempting Tim, which I seriously enjoyed. When I saw this one was a single mom and small town romance, I knew I would be interested. Then I found out that they have a one-night stand, that leaves Melanie with a secret baby!? Yes, sign me up! And I really did enjoy this author’s story of Nash and Melanie. I enjoyed seeing them navigate the family dynamics seven years later. I mean what a surprise for Nash when he walked in that bar. I definitely would recommend this entire series!

ABOUT MELISSA

I’m an indie author that focuses on contemporary romance with a little bit of everything: humor, angst and sometimes suspense. A Reason To Stay, book one of the Blackwood Series, was my debut novel.

I grew up as a book worm, reading anything and everything and still try to read at least a book a week. I’ve always had an active imagination. Luckily, I now have time to put it to good use writing about characters that are constantly swarming around in my head.

I went from designing buildings to crafting stories. I’m a creative entrepreneur and coffee connoisseur.

REVIEW: Another great charity anthology! This one has a ton of fun novelettes that cover a ton of popular tropes. Back in the Burbs by Avery Flynn & Tracy Wolff

4 STARS

Release Date: March 30, 2021

SYNOPSIS: Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months–ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m thirty-five years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up. She’s willed me the keys to a house in the burbs, of all places, and dared me to grab life by the family jewels. Well, I’ve got the vise grips already in hand (my ex should take note) and I’m ready to fight for my life again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house. There are forty-seven separate HOA violations, and I feel them all in my bones. Honestly, I’m surprised no one’s “accidentally” torched the house yet. I want to, and I’ve only been standing in front of it for five minutes. But then my hot, grumpy neighbor tells me to mow the lawn first and I’m just…done. Done with men too sexy for their own good and done with anyone telling me what to do. First rule of surviving the burbs? There is nothing that YouTube and a glass of wine can’t conquer.

Back in the Burbs is a hilarious enemies-to-lovers rom com!

REVIEW: Divorced, back at the parents, and in your thirties?! Yep, Mallory is on the hot mess express, and I loved every minute. I’m a huge Avery Flynn fan because she always makes me laugh out loud while reading, and this book was no exception. I enjoyed the journey Mallory went on after the bad hand life has dealt her. Cue Nick for all the swoony vibes. I wanted a little more romance, but if you like a story about a woman figuring it all out on her own, you’ll definitely like this one!

Rachel, Out of Office by Christina Hovland

4 STARS

Release Date: January 25, 2021

SYNOPSIS: Out of reach, out of touch, out of her mind. Single mom, Rachel Gibson seriously needs a break. Between an absent ex-husband, rowdy twin boys, managing the PTA, and running her own business, her candle isn’t burning at both ends, it’s a full-blown puddle of wax. She’s the go-to girl for other entrepreneurs, handling all the tasks they dread. Social media posts? She’s got it. Website updates? She’s on it. Light bookkeeping? Oh, yes. Thank goodness she’s about to get a reprieve when her in-laws plan to whisk her boys away for a summer of fun at the family lake house. But when her ex backs out of the family retreat, and her former inlaws insist she attend their yearly vacation summit with her munchkins, she finds herself in a pickle. Even though she’s drowning in to-dos, she’s horrible at saying no — especially when it comes to her kids Once Rachel arrives at the lake house, she struggles to keep up with work and balance the demands of family all the while fending off pesky new feelings about her ex-brother-in-law. Which makes her start to wonder… Is falling for her ex-husband’s brother just one more messy complication added to the dumpster fire?  Or is anything possible when she’s out of office…

An adorable romantic momedy!

REVIEW: This was super cute! The characters were very realistic, which made all the different relationship dynamics so relatable. It was great to see the characters interact in all the situations that came up. I’m a huge fan of forbidden romances like these, where some people don’t think they should be together, but they would really make each other happy. Travis is so much more than Rachel knows of him (which consists mostly of what her ex Gavin, Travis’ brother, told her). I really felt Travis proved himself again and again. Rachel kind of drove me crazy, because she’s trying to be the strong independent woman that does it all. I can totally respect that, but everyone needs help! I just liked seeing these characters grow and find the way they fit together. The angst and chemistry definitely made this an entertaining read!

Top Reads of 2020!

I read 387 books this year, so narrowing it down was more difficult than ever! And it is always difficult because I am the most indecisive person ever. So here are some books I didn’t mention in that stood out when I was going back through my reading challenge this week.

Favorite from a Favorite Author

I knew I was going to like this one, I love Ilsa Madden-Mills’ books, BUT this one blew me away. It was so freakin’ good!

MOST UNEXPECTED READ

GAVE ME THE BIGGEST BOOK HANGOVER

This taboo read was a little outside my comfort zone, so I actually stopped reading. But then I couldn’t stop thinking about it and had to pick it back up. It wrecked me in THE BEST way!

I still haven’t written my Credence review because the book hangover was real.

LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY

Absolutely hilarious, but with a ton of depth. I definitely recommend this Sunshine/Grump story!

TAKES PLACE DURING THE PANDEMIC

Kennedy Fox really pulled at my heartstrings with this enemies-to-lovers story. Forced proximity due to the pandemic and all the anxieties that felt so familiar. I sincerely loved every moment of this one.

ENEMIES TO LOVERS

This one is what I like to call Trope-tastic. Enemies-to-Lovers, Single-Dad, Sibling’s Ex. It’s got ALL the damn feels and I was here for it.

Hard Love by Sara Ney

5 STARS!!!

Release Date: November 19, 2020

SYNOPSIS: “HARD TO LOVE.” Hard head. Bad attitude. Terrible boyfriend. That’s what my exes have said about me—but I wasn’t serious about any of them, so what do I care what rumors they spread? What I need is to be left alone; by the press, by the paparazzi, and by women. Too bad I’m about to be surrounded by them for the weekend. My obnoxious, matchmaking brother is getting married, and he’s doing his damndest to find me a wedding date…
“HARD TO FIND.” That’s what they say about good men—they’re hard to find. Not that when I find one, I’ll be the type he’s looking for; too nice, too ordinary, too boring. My cousin is getting married, and her fiancé insists on throwing me at his brother. Cold, uncaring professional football player Tripp Wallace would never look twice at a woman like me. Too bad for both of us, I was wrong…

REVIEW: This was so different, but in a really good way! I had no idea what the characters were going to say, what they were going to do, how they were going to come together, how feelings were going to develop between them. Tripp was a fascinating male lead. I mean I love the Wallace family in general, they’re so inviting yes, theres always a ton of bickering between then all–it comes from a place of love. They definitely all have different personalities and Tripp and Trace are so very different. Tripp was very reminiscent of someone on the spectrum. He kind of says whatever he’s thinking without the realization that there are social niceties that we adhere to in order to not hurt other peoples feelings. This is honestly my favorite type person, as long as I have some heads up. Haha.

Chandler is also interesting because she’s in a similar position to Hollis when it comes to the family obligations. Although it was a little less delved into, other than knowing that she’s having difficulty finding her dream job, because the relationship between these characters ruled the story in the best way. I do like how both characters seem to kind of find themselves by interacting with each other. We get to witness better sides of both of them as they continue to get to know each other and develop a relationship. I just really enjoyed this one! Also, the little preview of True Wallace at the end was my cat nip, and I am so freaking excited for the next book, Hard Luck!!

The Cabin by Jasinda Wilder

5 STARS!

Release Date: October 23, 2020

SYNOPSIS: One year ago, I buried my husband.
One year ago, I held his hand and said goodbye.
Now I spend most of my days lost somewhere between trying to remember every smallest detail of our lives, and trying to forget it all. I fill my hours with work until I’m too exhausted to remember him, to feel anything at all.
One year, 365 days—and then one knock at my door changes everything. A letter from him, a last request, a secret will:

My dearest Nadia,
Trust me, my love. One last time, trust me. Sometimes the epilogue to one story is the beginning of another.

REVIEW: I’m always a little weary about books where are you get to know a couple and one of them is going to pass away. I can’t help but think of how I’m going to be invested in that couple, but then have to be invested in a new couple. This made me unsure about the setup of this story, but I sincerely ended up appreciating that the reader gets a lot more insight into Nadia’s relationship with her husband that passed away. It’s not just the aftermath of being a widow, we get the actual story of both relationships. Readers get to see the process of her grieving, which I think adds a lot to the point when she finally starts to move on. Jasinda Wilder did a wonderful job of weaving a story throughout both relationships that really made you appreciate everything that each character went through. This is definitely a tearjerker and hit me right in the feels! I think what’s really amazing is Nathan‘s acceptance and understanding–which stems from his own experiences. He’s also just an understanding man, and I really appreciated him as a male lead. Talk about book boyfriends. This story surprised me, made me cry, made me laugh, and seriously warmed my soul. I would definitely recommend it!

Hard Fall by Sara Ney

5 STARS? ALL THE STARS!!!

Release Date: August 18, 2020

SYNOPSIS: “Hard Fall” That’s what my mom is always saying: “The bigger you are, the harder you fall.” She’s talking about love—I’ve never been in it myself, but that doesn’t stop me from secretly matchmaking for my friends. Who would suspect me, a world class athlete, of meddling in other people’s love lives? I love Love, especially when it’s not me who’s doing the falling…
“No Thanks.” That’s what Hollis Westbrooke said when I asked her on a date. Well, propositioned her, actually—but it was all a big joke; one she doesn’t think is funny. My stomach is in knots since I might actually like this girl so the joke is on me. Hollis’s father is my boss—and she doesn’t date players. The bigger they are, the harder they fall—especially when biggest player is me.

REVIEW: I knew Trace was going to be great, but WOW Sara Ney, just wow. Trace is everything. He’s so obnoxious, but as you get to know him it becomes so endearing. Sara Ney is so good at writing obnoxious characters that are hiding a heart of gold. Something I love about this series is that addresses the deeper emotions and whys beneath the stereotype—the downsides to being an athlete or having a lot of money. It just reminds the reader that there is more to each person that what meets the eye. I really appreciate that.

Okay, back to Trace. Meh definitely moved up my book boyfriend list. He will make you laugh and make you swoon! He’s just perfect for Hollis. She has some great qualities too. Working to support herself despite her family money and legacy in baseball. Her job as a book editor brings up some reader topics that made me as a reader feel at home. And just wait until you hear about Trace and books, swoony. I could possibly go on and on about this one, but I don’t want to give too much away. Let’s just say, I LOVED IT, and you need this book in your life right now!

Big Bad Cowboy by Carly Bloom

4.5 STARS!

Release Date: October 30, 2018

Publisher: Forever

SYNOPSIS: Who’s afraid of the big, bad cowboy? After one too many heartbreaks, Travis Blake hung up his cowboy hat and put Big Verde, Texas, behind him. But when he gets the call that his young nephew needs him, he knows he has to return home. His plan is to sell the family ranch and hightail it back to Austin, but there’s a small problem: the one person who stands in his way is the one person he can’t resist.

Maggie is pretty sure she hates Travis Blake. He’s irritating, he’s destroying her business, and . . . and he’s just so frickin’ attractive. But when they’re forced to work together, Maggie discovers that the Most Annoying Man in the World is more than he seems. He’s sweet with his nephew, he helps out in the community, and he makes her heart flutter. Maggie doesn’t want to risk everything on a man who wants to leave, but what if she can convince this wayward cowboy to stay?

REVIEW: Between the enemies-to-lovers vibe and Travis heading home to take care of his nephew, I knew I had to pick this one up. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but I was wrong! This book was way more than I thought it would be and I loved it! Seriously, the whole situation in the beginning is steamy and ridiculous in the best way. I loved seeing how the story progressed. Travis and Henry’s relationship had so much growth and was damn adorable. Plus, I kind of loved the way him and Maggie interacted. I just love every little part of this book and would definitely recommend it!

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

4.5 STARS!

Release Date: July 7, 2020

Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca

SYNOPSIS
Wanted:
One (fake) boyfriend
Practically perfect in every way

Luc O’Donnell is tangentially–and reluctantly–famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened. But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that’s when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don’t ever want to let them go.

REVIEW: I just adored this book. The writing pulled me in from the very start, and the witty banter and British humor kept me enthralled. There was just enough drama while watching the growth of the characters. I felt so invested in Luc from the very first scene, Alexis Hall did a wonderful job of making the characters endearing and human. It is always such a joy to read a romance where characters are dealing with real life issues while finding their HEA!
